The impact digitization has on businesses and society is tremendous; the pace of change is sometimes overwhelming. Where are we heading to in 2018?
Nobody can foresee how the world will look in the next years, decades or centuries, but there are some clues hidden in the short term direction. The following are some of these.
I consider these to be are the most crucial IT trends that will significantly shape our digital future in the short and long run:
1. Software-based platforms will become a game-changer for the manufacturing industry.
Every company will become a software-based enterprise or it will vanish. Since the platform economy is all about velocity, only the most agile companies will succeed. Per industry, no more than three platforms will survive and these will set the tone for the industry’s future.
2. Artificial Intelligence solutions will flourish in the manufacturing industry in 2018.
Machine Learning Platforms will become an indispensable ingredient of a digitalization strategy. Decision-making will be automated based on real-time data. There will be no good or bad decisions. The main criteria for success will be the pace of decision-making and data quality. Independent analysts estimated that the AI market will grow from $8 billion in 2016 to more than $47 billion in 2020.
3. The factory of the future will have its own digital twin.
Linked to real-world-objects and its sensors, digital twins can reproduce, analyze and predict processing in industrial production – in real time and with high accuracy. By 2021, industry analyst Gartner predicts that half of large industry companies will establish digital twins for their factories – gaining a 10 percent improvement in effectiveness.
The upcoming year holds new challenging and exciting projects for us. Digital transformation will become an even greater factor for both our industry and society. Which strategic technology trends are on your agenda in 2018?
