Having a child that is unwell is always hard on a parent. Having one that is desperately ill with cancer is unimaginable.
I should know, because it happened to me: in December 2016, my son Sean was diagnosed with leukemia.
For months he was in hospital as treatments such as chemo were administered - and failed. His best option was a bone marrow transplant, from a 100% matched donor. He needed a 10 out of 10 match of HLA proteins and blood cells, something which was not available from his family members. So the hospital had to go to a database to find it. We got lucky and, after a frightening few weeks, we found the ideal donor. Today, Sean is in remission.
My son’s life was saved by a stranger, a 28-year-old man who gave one litre of his own bone marrow. I don’t have the words to express how much we are indebted to this guy for this selfless act. He is our family’s superhero.
Every 20 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer such as, leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. For many people living with a blood cancer or blood disorder, a blood stem cell transplant from a matching donor is their only chance of survival. We have met many children over the past year who have needed bone marrow transplants and it is heart-breaking when a match cannot be found, as a stem cell transplant really is the last hope.
Imagine that you could help someone – a friend, a loved one or a child like Sean. You could give him/her the chance for a long, healthy life simply by donating some bone marrow.
This why Software AG (UK) Limited is holding donor drives at each office in the UK. This is only one of the things Software AG has done to support me and my family in this time of stress. I was working all through Sean’s hospital stay and Software AG made sure that I knew I did not have to worry about my job; my managers knew I had enough stress on my plate as it was. They were flexible enough to allow me to be there for Sean; often asking “are we doing enough to help?”
A business is driven by its people, and Software AG’s people are #withoutcompromise. Thank you - all of you - for supporting me and for registering to donate bone marrow and blood stem cells
