The Internet of Things (IoT) is producing new technology wonders on a daily basis.
As I have said before, we are entering an era where science fiction is becoming reality, at least for those of us old enough to remember a fully analog world.
We are well on the way to creating a digital world that not only mirrors the physical world, but also lets us manage and control the former to a degree or precision unimaginable until now. IT is delivering on its decades-old promise of unbounded innovation.
But, and it is a big but, whereas we may have 20 billion interconnected devices now and growing exponentially, there are uncountable billions of devices that are not connected and maybe never will be. I pointed out in a previous blog that today’s applications would be with us for a hundred years but the adage “if you run hardware long enough, it breaks; If you run software long enough, it works,” does suggest that analog devices will disappear faster than software applications.
Nevertheless, will we have a smart digital world coexisting beside a much larger mute, unconnected analog world and never the twain shall meet? Will the cost of retrofitting the world be too much?
Perhaps, but check this 2015 Startup of the Year company that will retrofit light switches so that they can be turned on and off through a smart phone app.
This is bringing your Granny into the digital age. No more painful getting out of a comfortable chair to adjust the lighting. With the holiday season almost upon us, this is a present that will delight much more than the usual tie, handkerchiefs or pair of socks. And, if this only works on US light switches, perhaps there is a conversion kit for Africa, Asia and Europe?
This great example of retrofitting points out that the number of potential devices attached to the Internet of Things could be a magnitude higher than any current predictions, and that the greatest integration program in the history of the world could be a lot greater.
But just think of the business value lying around in the form of unconnected devices waiting to be picked up. Entrepreneurs worldwide, go for it! Wherever you are we will connect you and maximize the impact of the Industrial Internet.
