Today is International Women's Day (IWD) – a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
IWD also commemorates the movement for women's rights, which began in Great Britain in 1897 with the Suffragette movement wanting the right for women to vote and in New York in 1909. Since then, day by day, women have made positive gains in the journey toward gender parity – including equal pay and equal rights.
At Software AG we are proud to recognize the women in our company who help us to make a difference. A healthy balance of genders, skills and talent is one of our strongest keys to success.
This is why today we celebrate IWD 2018 - and the theme #PressforProgress. Pressing for progress can take many forms; it can mean finding a mentor to help you further your career. It can mean becoming involved in organizations that help other women to succeed. Or, it can take the form of activism and protest. In our company we press for progress by recognizing and celebrating talent.
As our SVP of Global HR Christine Schwab said: “Women - and all people - have unique talents, perspectives, experiences and strengths. Bringing those skills and experiences into an organization helps to shape it, fortify it and make it better and stronger. By celebrating our differences can we achieve excellence.”
Excellence is what all of us at Software AG strive for. In my case I have been fortunate to have had a number of outstanding female role models in my career – and I am grateful for their mentoring and leadership. As leaders we have a responsibility to coach, inspire and create a workplace where women are able to do their best work and feel recognized.
Anneliese Schulz, our VP Sales for Asia, put it this way: “Leadership isn’t defined by gender but by the ability to inspire everyone to do their best work.”
Software AG recognizes the diversity and talent of all contributors to the company’s success. And in recognition of International Women’s Day we are launching the Women@Software AG Network, to create a forum for women to connect internally so they can learn from each other, network and share their experiences and ideas for success.
We are ready to press for more progress. Here’s to successful women – may we know them, may we be them!
